At a Glance
The Institute's schedule is grounded in a tripartite structure of theory, exploration, and practice. More detailed schedules, including specific reading and response assignments, will be shared with participants on acceptance to the Institute.
The Institute will include at least two sessions to be held outside (weather pending). These sessions will be in ADA accessible locations and will involve minimal walking, designed to be inclusive for participants with accessibility needs.
Theory Week: Online (June 30-July 3)
Devoted to situating the key notion of climate justice—as well as contiguous concepts like climate change, climate literacy, extractivism, slow violence, and others—within the context of the Anthropocene literary studies, political declarations, science reports, and climate literacy pedagogy.
Exploration Week: In-person (July 14-18)
Focused on case studies in which participants will engage with core texts—text that invite/demand readings with a climate justice lens—to consider two themes: the overlap between climate justice and racial justice, and the implications of climate justice for nonhuman life.
Practice Week: In-person (July 21-25)
Dedicated time and support for participants to develop lesson plans and ideas for incorporating climate justice texts and in their classroom teaching. Working in cohorts and teams, participants will select the readings that fit their needs, discuss teaching ideas, and design class activities.
